Wired headphones offer three guaranteed advantages over wireless: no battery to charge, zero audio latency, and better sound quality per dollar.
At any given price, a wired headphone will sound better than a wireless one. The wireless headphone has to allocate part of its budget to Bluetooth chips, batteries, ANC processors, and microphones. The wired headphone spends everything on drivers and build quality.
Impedance determines whether you need an amplifier. Rule of thumb:
- **Under 80 ohms:** Works from any device (phone, laptop, audio interface)
- **80-150 ohms:** Benefits from an amp but works without one
- **150+ ohms:** Needs a dedicated headphone amplifier
The Sennheiser HD 600 (300 ohm) is the gold standard for mixing and critical listening but requires an amp. The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro at 80 ohms works great from a laptop or audio interface. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x at 38 ohms runs from anything.
Detachable cables are a major advantage. When a cable wears out (and they all do eventually), you replace the $15 cable, not the $270 headphone. The ATH-M50x and Sennheiser HD 600 both have detachable cables.
